D-2 vs D-4 Visa for South Korea: Which One Do You Actually Need?
We get this question in nearly every first consultation about South Korea: what's the actual difference between D-2 and D-4, and which one am I supposed to apply for?
D-4: the language and pre-degree route
D-4 is generally for students enrolling in a Korean language program or non-degree pre-course study — most commonly the path students take before their Korean is strong enough to enter a degree program, or before they've met a university's direct-entry language requirement.
D-2: the degree-track route
D-2 is generally for students admitted directly into a degree program — bachelor's, master's, or PhD — at a Korean university, once your language level and academic credentials already meet the program's direct-entry bar.
How students usually move between them
A common pattern for Nepali students is starting on D-4 at a language institute, reaching a required IELTS band, then transitioning to D-2 once admitted into a degree program — the two aren't competing options so much as sequential stages for students who need to build their Korean first.
How we help you decide
Your starting point should be your current IELTS band and target program's direct-entry requirements, not a general preference for one visa over the other. In your consultation, we map your actual language level against your target universities' entry bars and tell you honestly whether D-4 first is the faster overall path, or whether you're ready to apply D-2 directly.
